Pantani mont ventoux 1994

A bike ridden to a Tour de France stage victory by Marco Pantani on Mont Ventoux in is one of the star attractions in an auction of sporting memorabilia in Milan next month. The rider nicknamed il Pirata — the Pirate — who died in won the final two Grand Tour stages of his career on the bike at that year's Tour. Inhowever, with his team switching to predominantly pink jerseys to avoid clashing with the yellow jersey sported by the race leader, the bike was painted mainly black with pink accents.

Besides that Mont Ventoux stage — where he beat Lance Armstrong, winner of the overall but later stripped of that and six other victories in the race, to the stage win — Pantani also won a stage from Briancon to Courchevel in the Tour. The bikes have been part of the collection of the museum of Mercatone Uno, the Italian furniture and electricals retailer, which is now bankrupt. The full spec appears below, and you can view the full auction catalogue here.

Remembering Marco Pantani.

Stretches for knee pain

Ironically, and I remember it like it was yesterday, earlier that day I was having a conversation with Michele Ferrari. He and Marco didn't work together, but the two of them were friendly and I asked him, 'hey what's going on with Marco these days?

Michele told me he hadn't heard good reports lately and he was concerned how things might end up. I sat there alone, and thought "Fuck! The climber I'd battled on, and off, the bike for so long was dead.

It's nearly ten years since his passing but I still remember my very first race with him. It was at the Tour of Mexico, in I was there with Motorola and Carerra were there with Chiapucci and Pantani too. I have to be honest I didn't notice him much at the race. He wasn't a team leader and, although he was seen as a promising climber, he'd not made a huge impact on my life yet.

Of course, I took notice when he was second at the Giro later that year. That's when the whole world sat up and took notice. There was this whole plot between Evgeni Berzin and Miguel Indurain and in the middle of that was Pantani, who finished second and won back-to-back stages.

He stole the show and he damn near stole the race as well. I wasn't a GC rider at the time, so I didn't give it a lot of thought and I wasn't fixated on the Giro, like I later would be with the Tour. Marco had a lot of style as a bike racer. He was a complicated enigma, who had a lot of character, a ton this is how yanks spell this word of charisma and people were compelled by him and the way in which he flew up mountains.

On the bike he was a quiet guy though. There weren't these huge gestures or flamboyance, like you had with other Italians, because Marco was a rider who would do his talking when and where it matted. On the climbs, out of the saddle, and with the bunch busting a gut just to stay with him.

I remember how he used to be surrounded by his entire team in the peloton, almost to the point where it was annoying. We did some of that too, but his teammates were very protective of him and if you came anywhere near him you'd get the wrath of his entire squad. But style-wise he was smooth, efficient of course, and just so, so explosive. He had the ability to detonate a race and, as a rival, as another member of the peloton, you had to accept and respect his ability.

Forget the star aspect. Pantani wasn't a star, he was more like a rock star. He had the aura, he had the following and he was huge. As an American coming over and playing a European sport, I was in a different position. Now, 52, Poli works at races and is a guide for InGamba Tours. We recently caught up with him by telephone. I was the tallest in the peloton.

I am 6-foot-4, I weighed pounds. Normally my position was in the gruppetto. Sometimes on the climbs I would ask people to push. You are too heavy! Everyone was in a bad mood. It was too hot in our hotel, some guys were even sleeping on the terrace. It was a brutal Tour that year. The day before I won, Armstrong, Bugno, Scirea all went home. It was a very hard Tour that year. When we got to the hotel that day after the stage, I jumped into the swimming pool with all my riding gear on.

Eros Poli recounts surprise 1994 Ventoux victory

The next morning I woke up, I was so tired. The last thing I wanted to do was race up Mont Ventoux. Everyone was attacking. The top teams were going hard to control the breakaways. Then all of a sudden it stopped, and everyone had a pee-break. I went back to the team car because we were nearing the feed zone. Then Davide Cassani attacked right before the feed zone.

I was so angry, because now we could not eat or get a proper drink. I rode back to the main group, and now it was all stretched out in a long line. I went all the way to the front. The peloton started to slow again, but I did not want to stop. There were three lines of riders across the road. I jumped on the grass, pushed the front, and then I just attacked.Appunti - 25 Ottobre - 0 Commenti.
